Introduction

India stands as one of the ancient civilizations globally. Our history is thousands of years old and is popular all over the world. It is not without reason that every year thousands of tourists come from far and wide to see our rich heritage. Temples have great importance in our culture. Our ancient temples are an example of excellent architecture and craftsmanship. Numerous temples hold secrets waiting to be uncovered. Today we are going to tell you the story of one such ancient and mysterious temple. We will talk about the Kedarnath temple of Uttarakhand.

The Historical Significance of Kedarnath Temple

This temple is a unique temple. There are many stories about who built it. Some say that this temple was built by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata period to get rid of their sins, while others say that Adi Shankaracharya built it in the eighth century. Amidst all these stories, one thing is certain that this temple is full of many mysteries. You will be surprised to know that the Kedarnath temple, a symbol of faith and devotion, was covered in snow for 400 years and at that time no one knew that there was an ancient temple of Baba Bholenath inside the snow.

Unique Architecture and Construction

Kedarnath Mahadev temple is the center of faith for millions of devotees. But due to its amazing construction, its remote location and a rich history, this temple attracts many national and international researchers. Do you know that Kedarnath and some other Shiva temples in India are built in a geographical straight line? That too, when there was no advanced technology in the world.

The Mystery of its Construction

Kedarnath temple, located in the lap of Himalayas, is the highest temple in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district. Its construction is so amazing that there is no other temple like it in the whole world. This temple is built 3600 meters above sea level. Its construction looks like it was built not by humans but by superhumans. After the Pandavas, the temple was not damaged for many years, but by the eighth century the temple had broken down at many places. It is believed that in the eighth century, Jagat Guru Shankaracharya got it renovated.

The Interlocking Technique

Interlocking technique has been used to join its stones together. Truly amazing construction! Today we need trains, mechanical lifts and many modern machines to build a building. On the other hand, thousands of years ago, in a remote region of the Himalayas, where it is difficult to even walk easily, how could such a huge temple have been built with thousands of tons of heavy stones?

Kedarnath Pilgrimage: An Adventure in Itself

The history and construction of Kedarnath temple is more surprising than its story. The journey to Kedarnath temple is an adventure in itself. It is believed that the journey to Kedarnath has been going on for thousands of years. Even today, Kedarnath Yatra is the most important among the four Dham Yatras.

 Accessibility and Timing

If you want to come to Kedarnath, then understand that there is no railway station near Kedarnath. The nearest railway station is Rishikesh Railway Station, which is about 210 kilometers from Gaurikund. And you have only six months time for this, because the temple is open only for six months in a year. During this time, we humans i.e. common people can worship Lord Shiva, but the temple is closed for the remaining 6 months. According to old sayings, in these six months, Laksh and Gandharva come to Kedarnath temple and worship Lord Shiva. But what is the reason behind this!

The Legends and Myths

Were you aware that the Kedarnath temple was constructed by the Pandavas? The Kedarnath temple is so old that it is mentioned in our mythology. This temple has been written about in great detail in Skanda Purana, Vayu Purana and Kedarkhand.

The Story of Nara and Narayana

According to Vayu Purana, when Brahma Ji created this universe, to protect it, Lord Vishnu took the form of two sages named Nara and Narayana. They did intense penance to make Lord Shiva happy on the Gandhamadan mountain in Kedarnath. Their dedication touched Lord Shiva, so he showed up in front of them. Lord Shiva asked Nara and Narayana to ask for a boon. Nara and Narayana asked Lord Shiva for the boon of living in Deedar Bhoomi in his visible form. Lord Shiva granted them the boon and left saying Tathastu. Since then, Kedarnath Bhoomi is considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva.

The Story of the Pandavas

The most popular and interesting story of Kedarnath temple is related to the Pandavas. You must have heard the story of the great epic Mahabharata. The Mahabharata war is considered to be the biggest war in the world. In this, the Pandavas defeated the Kauravas and won. But very few people know what happened after this war. The Mahabharata war has been called a war between Dharma and Adharma. In this war, to protect Dharma, the Pandavas had to fight with their own brothers, the Kauravas. The Pandavas won this battle which lasted for 18 days. They killed Duryodhana and all the other Kauravas. Not only this, to win the war, the Pandavas had to kill their Guru Dronacharya, Bhishma Pitamah and many relatives. After the war ended, the Pandavas got the kingdom of Hastinapur, but they were not getting satisfaction. The guilt of killing their own brothers and gurus was troubling them.
